Do you have what it takes to be the next Beading Idol?

Abbi Berta of The Bead Place is hosting a jewelry design contest structured like the popular singing competition. Beading Idol will have a panel of celebrity judges who will decide who makes it to the next round!  Top designers will receive prize packages and the winner crowned "Beading Idol" will be awarded with a fabulous grand prize!

Our panel of celebrity judges includes:

Cynthia Deis (of Ornamentea)

Lois Venarchick (of Wynwoods Gallery & Studio and Diva Yarn)

Debra Saucier (Swarovski Ambassador, and of Crystal Clay and The Bead & Wire Shop)

Kellie Sutton (of Kellie's Bead Boutique)

Stephanie Harrell (of Bead Artistry)

Andrew Thornton (of Allegory Gallery)

Kieu Pham Gray (of The Urban Beader)

Kay Goss (of Stars Beads and Stars Clasps)

Our first challenge has started!  Here are the challenge rules:

Make a piece of jewelry inspired by a song you love.  You will be judged not only by symbolism, but also the overall design and aesthetics of your piece.  Be sure to be able to produce lyrics or a short description of the song's meaning if it has no lyrics.  E-mail a large high quality photo of your design (along with song title and lyrics/meaning) to by Thursday, August 15th.

By doing so, you agree to allow The Bead Place permission to use your name, location, and design photos as advertisements for the contest, future contests, and in galleries on our website, on Facebook, and other social media, etc.

After the first round has been judged, you will be notified via e-mail if you will move to the next round.  Please remember to "like" The Bead Place on Facebook to stay updated with the contest.  If you have a blog or are active on social media websites, feel free to talk about the contest, your pieces, and how much fun you're having!

Thanks so much!  Check back to this page to see  how the competition progresses!

Congratulations to Linda Biermann and Melinda Orr!  They are the winners of the first round of Beading Idol!  The following are photos of their submissions with the song title and lyrics of their choice:

By Linda Biermann

I'm a King Bee by Slim Harpo

Well I'm a king bee, buzzing around your hive

Well I'm a king bee, buzzing around your hive

Well I can make honey baby, let me come inside

I'm young and able to buzz all night long

I'm young and able to buzz all night long

Well when you hear me buzzin' baby, some stinging is going on

(well... buzz a while... sting it then...)

Well I'm a king bee, want you to be my queen

Well I'm a king bee, want you to be my queen

Together we can make honey, the world ever never seen

Well I'm a king bee, can buzz all night long

Well I'm a king bee, can buzz all night long

Well I can buzz better baby, when your man is gone

Select judge comments about Linda's piece:

"Looks well made and well thought out." -Kieu Pham Gray

"Love the colors and how unique it looks.  Job well done!" -Kellie Sutton

"I like the combination of metal and the 3 dimensional aspects on this cuff, it really enhances the theme used. Great work." -Kay Goss

By Melinda Orr

Babylon by David Gray

"This design is from the term.."Let go your heart"...letting go of all you know to learn anew... It's how I feel when trying out new concepts in my designing. I also need music for my ideas to flow and am an avid Pandora listener while I work."

Friday night I'm going nowhere

All the lights are changing green to red

Turning over TV stations

Situations running through my head

Well looking back through time

You know it's clear that I've been blind

I've been a fool

To ever open up my heart

To all that jealousy, that bitterness, that ridicule

Saturday I'm running wild

And all the lights are changing red to green

Moving through the crowd I'm pushing

Chemicals all rushing through my bloodstream

Only wish that you were here

You know I'm seeing it so clear

I've been afraid

To tell you how I really feel

Admit to some of those bad mistakes I've made

If you want it

Come and get it

Crying out loud

The love that I was

Giving you was

Never in doubt

Let go your heart

Let go your head

And feel it now

Babylon, Babylon

Sunday all the lights of London

Shining , Sky is fading red to blue

I'm kicking through the Autumn leaves

And wondering where it is you might be going to

Turning back for home

You know I'm feeling so alone

I can't believe

Climbing on the stair

I turn around to see you smiling there

In front of me

If you want it

Come and get it

Crying out loud

The love that I was

Giving you was

Never in doubt

And feel it now

Let go your heart

Let go your head

And feel it now

Let go your heart

Let go your head

And feel it now

Let go your heart

Let go your head

And feel it now

Let go your heart

Let go your head

And feel it now

Babylon, Babylon, Babylon

The Bead Place Stash Swap

The Bead Place Stash Swap

Here's the scoop - Abbi Berta of is hosting a stash swap!  The idea of this swap is to revive your stash and your creativity by challenging you to work with beads and findings that are new to you, from someone else in the swap!  There's also prizes involved!

Here's the deal - Swap participants should collect approximately $25 retail worth of beads and/or findings from their own stash, plus a $5ish bonus item.  Shopping for swap items is discouraged.  Participants should then photograph what they're planning to swap.  Blogging a photo of what you're sending in, with a link to the swap info (this page), is encouraged but definitely not necessary.  Participants will then e-mail that photo and some other information to ME ( and I will drool over all of the goodies.  Once all of the entry photographs have been turned in, participants will be given the name and address of the future recipient of their loot (and a small note about themselves and what kind of beadwork they like to do).  Participants will have a week to mail their items.  Once the items have been received, participants should feel free to post pictures of what they've gotten to create their project.  Then, in a little over a month, a picture of the finished piece is due via e-mail!

Here's the catch - (...And by catch, I mean the good thing!) Once I have received all of the photos of the beautiful creations, I will post all of the pictures to this blog.  Participants, and participants only, will get to vote for their favorite piece.  The artist with the most votes will get a HUGE GRAND PRIZE! mailed to them that will be composed of $5 (approximately) items mailed in to ME by all of the participants, plus a bunch more stuff!  There will also be more prizes awarded to other participants.  Pretty cool, right?  Remember, the more people that participate in the swap, the bigger the prizes get, so don't forget to get your friends involved!

Here's the How-To

E-mail with a photo of what you're planning to swap and your mailing address by Sunday, April 1st at the latest.

Once you've gotten the name and mailing address of someone, mail them your loot and a small note about yourself and what kind of jewelry making you do.  You will also then mail your $5ish bonus item to ME so that I can assemble the prize packs!  This will need to be completed as soon as possible, but no later than Monday, April 9th

When you receive your goodies, get to work!  You will need to create a piece of jewelry made out of the beads from the swap.  You don't have to use all of the beads from the swap, nor only the beads from the swap, but it needs to be obvious that you've used your swap materials.  Take a picture of your finished piece and submit it to me, via e-mail, by Saturday, May 19th

You will receive an e-mail once all of the photos have been posted on this blog so that you can view them and vote for your favorite.  E-mail me back within the week with the name of the artist who created your favorite piece.

The grand prize winner will be announced on June 1st!

I'm excited!  Have questions?  Leave a comment on this post or e-mail me at

If you are interested in donating prizes in return for shout-outs, or are interested in sponsoring the swap, please e-mail me.

Thanks so much for reading!  With your help, this is going to be fantastic and fun!
